Have you heard about “Tali Shapiro?”

Hi guys,

I was scrolling through Instagram the other day and I came across an account for a woman named Tali Shapiro. The account was mainly made up of short videos created by a Jozi looking (and sounding) princess. I thought to myself  ‘This girl looks an awfully lot like Suzelle DIY.’  Could this be the same person?

The pieces of the puzzle were put together when I was going through Showmax looking for something to watch.  I came across a mockumentary called Tali’s Wedding Diary and decided to watch the trailer. It was then that I learned that the mastermind behind Suzelle DIY, Julia Anastasopoulos, is also the creator and actress behind Tali Shapiro.

The show follows Tali, a Joburg Princess who has moved to Cape Town, on her wedding planning journey. I always say how true life creates the best entertainment and this show is a testament to that fact. In many interviews about the character, Julia mentions that the inspiration behind Tali’s wedding diary arose from her own wedding planning experiences.  Although the show is styled as a comedic mockumentary, there are serious undertones which the characters address throughout the show. The pressure of Social Media plays a big role. This theme is already present in the trailer for the show.

Have a look at the official trailer here: Tali’s wedding diary trailer

From what I have seen so far, I am really excited to see where Julia takes this character. I admire her talent and how she is able to take a stereotype and transform herself into someone that we have all seen sitting at the Sorbet on the corner, or waiting at the local Seattle coffee shop.I feel that many people are going to relate to the character and in doing so, will be able to laugh at themselves and learn not to take themselves too seriously. I know this is something I have experienced while watching her Instagram videos.

What I am finding so interesting is reading about the actress behind the character. Julia seems like someone you would love to be friends with. In an interview with Essentials Magazine, she talks about how her characters differ and how, in real life, she is allergic to Garlic. [Welcome to the club Julia!] Interview with Essentials Magazine

It really is great to see homegrown talent popping up all over the place. The show, Tali’s Wedding Diary, premieres on Showmax in December and consists of 8 episodes. A South African show premiering on a South African streaming platform. It does not get any more local than that!

Look out for Tali’s Wedding Diary on Showmax this December!

Fantastic Music Videos ALERT!

Hi guys!

There has been a lot of great music released in the past few weeks but I wanted to share my two favourite new songs with you. Two of my favourite artists released new music videos and they are both worth the watch! This week P!nk released a music video for “Beautiful Trauma” and Rita Ora released a wonderful music video for her new song “Anywhere” last month.

Let’s Break it down, shall we?

Starting with Rita Ora. Last weekend she hosted the EMA’s [European music awards]. She was GREAT! She was full of energy and had the most outrageous costume changes! On stage, her hosting never felt forced which can sometimes be noticeable with award show hosts. She was, obviously, passionate about the theme of the award show and was so supportive of all the nominees and winners. I really enjoyed the show. However, the highlight of the show was her performance!

Ora performed a mash-up of her widely popular songs “Your song” and “Anywhere.” It was awesome! Her voice is beautiful and her look was so laid back which added value to her performance. Instead of focusing on her appearance, you focused on her music and it was refreshing to see an artist perform without all the bells and whistles. She did have dancers included in her performance but what made it so interesting was that her dances were all dressed in the colours of the rainbow. The artistic direction of her performance was just beautiful and this beauty was carried over into the music video for “Anywhere.”

The video is simple. It is Rita and her music. She looks beautiful and you can see that this song clearly means a lot to her. She looks genuinely happy to be sharing this song with the world and it does not go unnoticed. This song has been on repeat for me the past week and I do not intend on stopping it anytime soon.

My next favourite song at the moment is P!nk’s “Beautiful Trauma.” Now, I cannot talk about this song and this legend without mentioning her performance at the AMA’s [American music awards]. Yes, it’s music award season if you have not guessed… P!nk sang the song ON THE SIDE OF A MASSIC BUILDING IN THE MIDDLE OF LA! She performed acrobatics, ON THE SIDE OF A BUILDING, while singing! It was incredible! If you have not watched the performance yet…. Please Youtube it. You will not be sorry.

Here is a link: P!nk at the AMA’s

Her music video for the song was released today and I have one thing to say. Channing Tatum.

Channing Tatum waking up next to P!nk.

Channing Tatum dancing with P!nk.

Channing Tatum serving P!nk cocktails.

Just Channing Tatum in P!nk’s music video. What more do I need to say?

The video is beautiful and cinematically exciting. “Beautiful Trauma” is a great song (PG advised, however) The art direction of the video is on point. P!nk looks spectacular in her 1950’s inspired costumes and well Channing Tatum.

Go have a look at these two awesome videos and let me know what you think!

Grey’s Anatomy turns 300

Last night in America, Grey’s Anatomy aired their 300th episode… 300, can you even begin to contextualise how many episodes that is? How many nights’s the cast stayed up to shoot? How many times each actor’s scrub costume was washed? How many times Shonda sat in the editing suit trying to figure out the best way to piece her artwork together? It is remarkable how this show has gone on to create 300 episodes. 300 episodes does not only mean that the cast, crew and creative teams were able to create this work but it means the fans, You and I, wanted 300 episodes. We demanded 300 episodes and we deserve 300 more episodes. Because Grey’s Anatomy is not part of our lives and how can it not be? After 300 episodes, 14 seasons, 12 years and countless tears later this show, world, story, is part of our lives. We have earned 300 episodes.

Personal feelings aside, one has to admire the brains behind such a revolution. Shonda Rhimes. Creator, queen, producer, queen. Without her 300 episodes would never have been possible. She revolutionized TV. She created a world where doctors had lives and patients mattered and everyone had feelings which were and are expressed through her story. Her world, Grey Sloan memorial Clinic, is home to some of our worst fears, our greatest memories and our future goals.  She did this. Her imagination created a place that helps audiences work through some of their most difficult times. I know just how much Grey’s Anatomy has helped me and I am positive I am not the only one.

Shonda wrote a beautiful essay on her website about how she feels about this massive Grey’s Anatomy milestone and I thought it would be appropriate to share some of it with you all. She speaks about the first scene she ever filmed with the cast and the impression that it made on her. She speaks about how she feels that this dream of hers became a reality and she speaks about how the essence of the show lies within not only the strong characters she has created but within the strong women that carry this world to new heights constantly.

“I’ll tell you a secret. That’s me in that show. Not literally but… yeah, kinda literally. Season after season, pieces of my life are on that screen. I wrote myself into every character. I wrote my own histories. My heartbreaks. My loves. My family and my friends. My victories and my disasters. My life is in every episode. Who I am is in every episode. For me, the show is sort of a diary — I can watch it and know exactly what was going on in my real life when an episode was written.Writing “Grey’s” gave me a way to make sense of my life, to put order to it. To work out problems. To imagine. To grieve and to dream and to rejoice. I kept waiting for it to end. For people to be over it. To be done. But… fans are an extraordinary group of people.” [Shonda, 2017]

The truth is, we, the fans are extraordinary because we not only appreciate how much effort goes into creating the show but because we also see ourselves within the show. I see myself in the show. I see some of the best parts of me in the show and I also see some of my worst attributes in the show. It is why I connect so strongly with the show.  I could go on for hours about how much Grey’s Anatomy means to me however I will end off by saying this. Congratulations to the entire team who work day in and day out to bring us entertainment. Your work is brilliant and I am grateful for it…. to 300 more… ❤

A new Taylor Swift era…

So as I am sure most of you know Taylor Swift recently released a new track titled “Look what you made me do” and she premiered the music video last night at the VMA awards. The release came after much speculation and a social media wipe from the artist’s side. She wiped her social media pages clean and started posting very strange snake content. Ahead of the official release, there was already a vibe surrounding this new era of what is T. Swift up to…

I first heard a snippet of the song when Shonda Rhymes released a teaser video of her new TGIT season. She used the song as a background to her teaser content. At first, I thought ok, it seems different. Let me hear the rest of the song before I decide. I watched the music video last night and I must say, my feelings are very mixed. The song and record are created around the concept of her reputation, which in itself is not odd for an artist in the limelight. Their reputations are always under scrutiny and we do live in a very judgmental society. So I understand her wanting to speak out about her reputation.

The video takes on a rather synical approch. There are so many signifiers of the end of the ‘old’ Taylor Swift. She repeats many of the characters she has previously played in old music videos and makes so many refrences to stories that she has been involved with in the past year. There is a reference to her feud with Katy Perry, the incident with Kim and Kanye West and even a reference to her recent law suit which she won. There is no doubt that the video is beautifully crafted- which all Taylor Swift videos have in common. (Remember her trip to Africa for wildest dreams?)

It is clear that Taylor worked very hard on the minor details within the video. Many of them are not even visible on first glance but after the third or fourth time watching the video, it becomes clear how many Diggs the star is stabbing at her past. It is a really brilliant music video. There is so much to look at and it is clear that this video was not made on a small budget. I get it. I understand that she felt like it was time to speak out about all the shade she has been receiving from all ends. However, part of me is sad that she is trying so hard to kill off old Taylor- I loved old Taylor. 1989 was and still is one of my favorite records to date. That music inspired me so much and I still listen to it on a regular basis.

I understand that there comes a time where stars feel like they need to evolve and grow. However, Taylor Swift has always represented such positivity within the industry- a trait which should always be encouraged. So I am not completely sure of why she felt she needed to make this music so dark? Having said that, the video is really brilliant and clever. T.Swfit always manages to bring some wit into her work and this is no different.

All I can say is that the next Taylor Swift era looks like it is going to be one hell of a ride…

Have a look at her video on her VEVO channel 🙂

Nik Rabinowitz at the Goliath Comedy club -26th August

I have wanted to catch a live comedy act show at The Goliath Comedy Club in Melrose Arch for ages now. But as it happens, life has seemed to always get in the way. You know the usual… however this week I needed a great night out after a long hard week and I caught an advert on Facebook for Nik’s one-man show ‘Forty fied’ which he was performing in this past weekend. Having seen Nik perform before, I knew that his comedy would be top notch and I was really excited to try something new rather than the usual dinner and a movie.

I have been a fan of Roast Café for a while now. I love their coffee, their drinks and the vibe there. It feels almost retro but completely cosmopolitan at the same time which I love. I have also heard time and time again that their baking is some of the best around town. (so if you ever try it, let me know if it stands up to the talk!) The combination of the awesome café with some live comedy is defiantly a combination I want to take advantage of.

For those of you who are not familiar with the Roast Café and Goliath Comedy club combo, it goes as follows. During the day the café is open for anyone to pop past for a great cup of coffee, a slice of cake or some delicious eats. Then on Friday and Saturday nights, the back of the restaurant gets transformed into a vibey comedy club. The club is owned by the famously hilariously Goliath Family and if you are lucky you get to witness one of the Goliath brothers share their talents on stage. If you are hungry you can enjoy dinner with your comedy or simply indulge in a few delicious cocktails while you laugh yourself a six pack.

Last night the show consisted of Nic Goliath as MC and a brilliant opening act by an up and coming female comedian. She was so funny. And it was so great to see some female energy up on stage. For the main act, Nik was on point last night! He was absolutely hilarious. The point that impressed me the most, however, was the way he read the room. Nik being as openly Jewish as we know him to be recognized that majority of his audience was bound to be Jewish. He made the most of this throwing the lingo, the phrases and the stories out there so that every ‘Yid’ in the room was in stitches. It was fantastic. He spoke for over an hour and I promise you that it was just as good as running at the gym.

I was so impressed by the café’s efficiency at providing all the show goers with such great service and an overall wonderful experience. It was one of my favorite nights out this year and hopefully, I will be visiting the comedy club and the café many more times in the coming future.

For more information about the comedy club and to book your next visit you can visit their website:  www.goliathcomedyclub.com

One Love Manchester

On the 22nd of May 2017 a horrific suicide bombing took place at Manchester Arena right after Ariana Grande’s concert. Lives were lost, lives were changed and a city was suddenly brought together by tragedy. There are no words to describe how terrible this incident was. Not only for the city of Manchester but for the world.  As a human race we need to stand together and fight back with the goodness that does still exist in this world. Love, respect and happiness can trump evil and this is what Ariana Grande realized when she organised a benefit concert to both honour the victims of the attack and fundraise money for victims and families who were affected by the attack.

On the 4th of June 2017, Ariana returned to Manchester for the concert of a lifetime. At first the concert was just going to be Ariana and her unbelievable voice, but then it become an event to showcase compassion and kindness and artists like Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus and Robbie Williams decided to take part in the event. The 3-hour spectacular was full of high profile artists, emotional moments and a set list full of positivity, love and inspiration.

I think this was such a perfect way to honour the victims of such a horrendous attack. Of course it will not take away the pain or fear caused by the attack but it was such a wonderful way to bring about some happiness during such a difficult and dark time. I am in such awe of Ariana for putting together such an event. I think she showed such maturity and strength with this event that I cannot do anything else but respect her. She showed people that in dark times they need to be strong and stay positive. Light overcomes darkness.

As strong as Ariana seemed to the public, I think this benefit also staged as a very important part in her own healing. I am sure it must be terrifying to leave the stage and hear the commotion of the bombing. To know that your fans, who have travelled and invested time and money to see you perform, have been victims of such an incident must be a terrible thought. I can only imagine how scared she must have been to return to the stage in Manchester and I send her so much love and respect for doing so.

The event was live streamed on numerous networks and social media sights including Facebook. The event was live streamed world wide because the artists did not want any fan to be left out of the event and she felt it was important for people all over the world to stand together and celebrate Love through music. The power of music and limitless and this benefit was testimony to that.

The full set list from the benefit:

Marcus Mumford – Timshel

Take That – Shine, Giants, Rule The World

A Dirty Dancing Disappointment

Hi guys,

A few weeks ago the 2017 re-imagining version of the absolute classic Dirty Dancing aired on ABC…  Logic dictates that because of the wonderful cast that was cast in this adaption that it would be some sort of good, however, this was not the case at all. This version is a flop and just left me with a whole lot of questions beginning with WHY???

Question 1: Why did someone feel the need to remake this classic? It is a classic FOR A REASON. Not every movie becomes iconic and when one does, that should be a sign that it should stay exactly the way that it was intended to be. Dirty Dancing (1987) is an absolute treat of a film, it seriously did not need a revamp.

Question 2: Why did the creators of the new film feel a need to change parts of the original? Well, maybe they didn’t want it to be exactly the same? Well, in that case, they should have written a NEW STORY. A story that was not Dirty Dancing perhaps? Maybe something leading on from the original but changing fundamental parts of the original to fit into a 2017/ still in the same time frame just did not work. This leads us back to question number 1- WHY REMAKE A CLASSIC?

Question number 3: And this was probably the biggest issue I had with the film- Why remix the beautiful music that made the classic so iconic? The moment I heard “She’s like the wind” set to a kind of hip hop beat I wanted to cry! Music can make or break something and this case it only helped break this film even further.

Question number 4: Why cast two people who have no chemistry on film, as one of the most romantic movie couples of all time? Abigail Breslin (Baby) and Colt Prattes (Johhny) had no chemistry on screen WHATSOEVER! They sent no shivers down my spine and there was no spark. No amount of editing could have created a spark that just did not exists.

Question number 5: Why change the ending? When I read about this major change in the film, I thought that maybe it would help establish a different type of Dirty Dancing. Maybe it would bring closure to fans of the film and give us some sort of view into the future of such loved characters. But to no avail. The ending of the new film is somewhere between a bad flashforward or a bad flashback, I am not sure as to which suits the part better. It was just weird…

The part that bothers me is, are people who have never seen the classic going to think that this film is what Dirty Dancing really is? Because if so then they would be missing the magic that the original brought to the screen all those years ago. I just hope this version does not turn people off the original one.

The acting was stiff and the creative direction was just in the completely wrong direction. Even small things like editing the lip syncing audio in sync with the visual picture were off. It was just a really bad situation. But I guess there is always the next time and one should always try again… Just please do not try and experiment with such a classic. Let’s leave iconic musicals to be enjoyed as iconic musicals. Please and Thank you!
