Have you heard about “Tali Shapiro?”

Hi guys,

I was scrolling through Instagram the other day and I came across an account for a woman named Tali Shapiro. The account was mainly made up of short videos created by a Jozi looking (and sounding) princess. I thought to myself  ‘This girl looks an awfully lot like Suzelle DIY.’  Could this be the same person?

The pieces of the puzzle were put together when I was going through Showmax looking for something to watch.  I came across a mockumentary called Tali’s Wedding Diary and decided to watch the trailer. It was then that I learned that the mastermind behind Suzelle DIY, Julia Anastasopoulos, is also the creator and actress behind Tali Shapiro.

The show follows Tali, a Joburg Princess who has moved to Cape Town, on her wedding planning journey. I always say how true life creates the best entertainment and this show is a testament to that fact. In many interviews about the character, Julia mentions that the inspiration behind Tali’s wedding diary arose from her own wedding planning experiences.  Although the show is styled as a comedic mockumentary, there are serious undertones which the characters address throughout the show. The pressure of Social Media plays a big role. This theme is already present in the trailer for the show.

Have a look at the official trailer here: Tali’s wedding diary trailer

From what I have seen so far, I am really excited to see where Julia takes this character. I admire her talent and how she is able to take a stereotype and transform herself into someone that we have all seen sitting at the Sorbet on the corner, or waiting at the local Seattle coffee shop.I feel that many people are going to relate to the character and in doing so, will be able to laugh at themselves and learn not to take themselves too seriously. I know this is something I have experienced while watching her Instagram videos.

What I am finding so interesting is reading about the actress behind the character. Julia seems like someone you would love to be friends with. In an interview with Essentials Magazine, she talks about how her characters differ and how, in real life, she is allergic to Garlic. [Welcome to the club Julia!] Interview with Essentials Magazine

It really is great to see homegrown talent popping up all over the place. The show, Tali’s Wedding Diary, premieres on Showmax in December and consists of 8 episodes. A South African show premiering on a South African streaming platform. It does not get any more local than that!

Look out for Tali’s Wedding Diary on Showmax this December!

Fantastic Music Videos ALERT!

Hi guys!

There has been a lot of great music released in the past few weeks but I wanted to share my two favourite new songs with you. Two of my favourite artists released new music videos and they are both worth the watch! This week P!nk released a music video for “Beautiful Trauma” and Rita Ora released a wonderful music video for her new song “Anywhere” last month.

Let’s Break it down, shall we?

Starting with Rita Ora. Last weekend she hosted the EMA’s [European music awards]. She was GREAT! She was full of energy and had the most outrageous costume changes! On stage, her hosting never felt forced which can sometimes be noticeable with award show hosts. She was, obviously, passionate about the theme of the award show and was so supportive of all the nominees and winners. I really enjoyed the show. However, the highlight of the show was her performance!

Ora performed a mash-up of her widely popular songs “Your song” and “Anywhere.” It was awesome! Her voice is beautiful and her look was so laid back which added value to her performance. Instead of focusing on her appearance, you focused on her music and it was refreshing to see an artist perform without all the bells and whistles. She did have dancers included in her performance but what made it so interesting was that her dances were all dressed in the colours of the rainbow. The artistic direction of her performance was just beautiful and this beauty was carried over into the music video for “Anywhere.”

The video is simple. It is Rita and her music. She looks beautiful and you can see that this song clearly means a lot to her. She looks genuinely happy to be sharing this song with the world and it does not go unnoticed. This song has been on repeat for me the past week and I do not intend on stopping it anytime soon.

My next favourite song at the moment is P!nk’s “Beautiful Trauma.” Now, I cannot talk about this song and this legend without mentioning her performance at the AMA’s [American music awards]. Yes, it’s music award season if you have not guessed… P!nk sang the song ON THE SIDE OF A MASSIC BUILDING IN THE MIDDLE OF LA! She performed acrobatics, ON THE SIDE OF A BUILDING, while singing! It was incredible! If you have not watched the performance yet…. Please Youtube it. You will not be sorry.

Here is a link: P!nk at the AMA’s

Her music video for the song was released today and I have one thing to say. Channing Tatum.

Channing Tatum waking up next to P!nk.

Channing Tatum dancing with P!nk.

Channing Tatum serving P!nk cocktails.

Just Channing Tatum in P!nk’s music video. What more do I need to say?

The video is beautiful and cinematically exciting. “Beautiful Trauma” is a great song (PG advised, however) The art direction of the video is on point. P!nk looks spectacular in her 1950’s inspired costumes and well Channing Tatum.

Go have a look at these two awesome videos and let me know what you think!

Top 10 series to watch right now!

Hi guys,

I LOVE watching series. It all started 4 years ago when I began my journey at film school. I was at film school and I took up series watching- Kind of ironic…  The timing of my new hobby could not have been better because we have seen such a rise in phenomenal series creation in the past few years. From comedy to drama, to horror and mystery, there really is a series for everyone out there!

I get asked so often what I am watching or what is good to watch because I do not enjoy watching rubbish. Therefore, I have decided to put together a list of my top 10 favourite series that I am watching right now. There are so many different series to choose from that I love! However, if I had to list every single one of my favourite shows you would be reading forever. So I have tried to limit my list to series that are on TV currently, or that can be found on streaming platforms like Netflix and Showmax. So here goes…

10.  Sex and the City

I recently started binge watching this classic series and I am so glad that I did! Women power is on trend right now (and forever) and this series is just full of it. Four friends sharing and enjoying all of life’s ups and downs together. What is there not to love?

9. The Bold Type

The bold type

If you have read some of my other posts, you would notice that I am a fan of Freeform and the TV that they create. Well, the network has signed on to air another wonderful Series called ‘The Bold Type.’ Following on in the spirit of Girl power, The Bold Type follows three girls on their career journey at a high fashion magazine. Apparently, this series is loosely based on the lives of the Girls who work at Cosmopolitan magazine. Whether this is true, I cannot confirm, however, I can say that if you are looking for a light and yet touching series to binge watch on a Saturday night, this is the series for you.

8.  Fuller House

fuller house

Do you remember the old hit show ‘Full House?’ Well, three seasons ago, Netflix decided to resurrect the much-loved characters from this fun and family loving show and create a spin-off titled ‘Fuller House.’ The new version is filled with the same heart and soul which caused everyone to fall in love with the original. Family, Love, laughter and a whole lot of awww moments are what this series is made off!

7. Jane the Virgin

new jane the virgin

I have written about this hilarious series before and I am mentioning it yet again. The reason for this is because this series is just so heartwarming. The story is sweet but it is the chemistry and talent of the cast that makes this series one of my favourites. The show has just embarked on their fourth season and I cannot wait to see what Jane gets up to next. Gina Rodriguez has done such an amazing job of creating such a relatable and lovable character that I just want to be best friends with Jane and sit around having coffee watching little Mateo play… (Watch the show, you will know what I mean)

6. Supergirl

Ok, so I know there are many people out there who are not convinced of this show. I have heard many different (negative) comments about Supergirl and while everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I must admit that I love this show. It is one of my favrotie super hero shows on TV at the moment and I am not ashamed to admit it. Considering all the girl power that is spread across the universe at the mooment, why should there not be a Supergirl on our screens?

5. Riverdale

It is not often that I love a pilot episode of a Series. However, with only 2 episodes into this mysterious show, I know it is going to be a goody! The pilot episode was so great. The show is based on the old Archy comics and it really is wonderful to see these much-loved characters come to life in the way that they do. I know season two is coming out with a bang, but since I am behind I am just going to enjoy my leisurely stroll across the small town of Riverdale. I will keep you posted!

4. Scandal/ The Fixer

First, we need to establish something. I am a complete Shonda Rhimes Fanatic. Her book ‘Year of Yes’ is basically my second Bible and her talent to tell stories motivates me every day. Scandal, or the Fixer as we know it in South Africa, is one of her best shows. Olivia Pope is a force to be reckoned with and being able to watch her ‘handle’ every situation that is thrown her way is fantastic. Unfortunately, however, the show is scheduled to end after this season and although I will be sad to see Olivia and her gladiators leave my TV schedule, I know that it is for the greater good of the show and well Shonda said so…

3. This is us

this is us

Do you remember last year a show about an unconventional Family took over the series world? If you do not remember, that is ok. Just trust me and get your hands on ‘This is us’ season 1. This show is an important piece of entertainment and I say that because the issues that the show tackles and the way in which the creators do so, is brilliant. Adoption, Weight issues, alcoholism, family, love, marriage, death, friendship and career struggles. You name it, it is there. This show is a tear-jerker, however, in the most beautiful way. When watching this show you do not only cry because there are sad moments but you cry because even the happy moments are so damn truthful!

2.  Younger

Surprisingly, not many people have heard of this show. I say surprisingly because it has a cast full of stars, a story that makes you want to know how it ends and fashion that is out of this world. Sutton Foster plays Liza Miller, 40-year-old publicists who pretend to be in her 20s for the sake of the job. Sutton, who is a Broadway star, takes on this role with such poise. I happen to think it is her best TV role yet! Hillary Duff also makes a comeback, playing Liza’a best friend, and it is great to watch her on TV again. This show is entering their fifth season and I am very happy that they are. If you are looking for a lighthearted, funny and fashionable series to curl up with after a long day at work. ‘Younger’ has you covered.

When trying to decide what my favourite series is, it is a pretty easy decision. If you have never watched ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ then I am sorry and suggest that you give it a try. The show has just started their 14th season! This show is basically iconic. Shonda Rhimes created this medical drama in the hopes of diversifying TV. ‘Grey’ Anatomy” was one of the first shows to show people that race, religion or sexual orientation is not exclusive and does not really matter at the end of the day. Anyone can be anything. A model can be a fantastic doctor, a lesbian woman can believe in G-d, a commitment-phobe can get married and an academic genius who happens to be Korean and raised in a Jewish home can run her own hospital in Switzerland. I rewatch this brilliant show on a regular basis and it always amazes me that I can rewatch the same episode a hundred times and still find something new that I relate to… Grey’s Anatomy you have my heart ❤

And there you have it, my top 10 favourite shows on TV right now. Let me know what you think of my top 10 picks and let me know if you have any suggestions of shows I should watch. I would love to hear them!

Nik Rabinowitz at the Goliath Comedy club -26th August

I have wanted to catch a live comedy act show at The Goliath Comedy Club in Melrose Arch for ages now. But as it happens, life has seemed to always get in the way. You know the usual… however this week I needed a great night out after a long hard week and I caught an advert on Facebook for Nik’s one-man show ‘Forty fied’ which he was performing in this past weekend. Having seen Nik perform before, I knew that his comedy would be top notch and I was really excited to try something new rather than the usual dinner and a movie.

I have been a fan of Roast Café for a while now. I love their coffee, their drinks and the vibe there. It feels almost retro but completely cosmopolitan at the same time which I love. I have also heard time and time again that their baking is some of the best around town. (so if you ever try it, let me know if it stands up to the talk!) The combination of the awesome café with some live comedy is defiantly a combination I want to take advantage of.

For those of you who are not familiar with the Roast Café and Goliath Comedy club combo, it goes as follows. During the day the café is open for anyone to pop past for a great cup of coffee, a slice of cake or some delicious eats. Then on Friday and Saturday nights, the back of the restaurant gets transformed into a vibey comedy club. The club is owned by the famously hilariously Goliath Family and if you are lucky you get to witness one of the Goliath brothers share their talents on stage. If you are hungry you can enjoy dinner with your comedy or simply indulge in a few delicious cocktails while you laugh yourself a six pack.

Last night the show consisted of Nic Goliath as MC and a brilliant opening act by an up and coming female comedian. She was so funny. And it was so great to see some female energy up on stage. For the main act, Nik was on point last night! He was absolutely hilarious. The point that impressed me the most, however, was the way he read the room. Nik being as openly Jewish as we know him to be recognized that majority of his audience was bound to be Jewish. He made the most of this throwing the lingo, the phrases and the stories out there so that every ‘Yid’ in the room was in stitches. It was fantastic. He spoke for over an hour and I promise you that it was just as good as running at the gym.

I was so impressed by the café’s efficiency at providing all the show goers with such great service and an overall wonderful experience. It was one of my favorite nights out this year and hopefully, I will be visiting the comedy club and the café many more times in the coming future.

For more information about the comedy club and to book your next visit you can visit their website:  www.goliathcomedyclub.com

Whats the Big deal about the Little Lies- part 2.

Hi everyone,

As promised, here is part two of my Big Little Lies review… We have discussed the TV version, now let’s talk about the book.

The book is fantastic! Big little lies was originally a book written by Liane Moriarty. The book follows the same story line as the series however some details and concepts are different. Which makes sense obviously because if you are planning to bring something to TV, you need to ensure that there is enough to keep the audience interested visually. I do not want to give away all the differences however there is one main difference that really makes the world of difference.

In the TV series, the story is lead by the adults. The parents in the story really lead the way which makes it feel like you are seeing this story play out with adult eyes. It works, don’t get me wrong, but it feels kind of usual. Big concepts, serious issues, adult eyes. In the book, however, it feels as if the story is being led by the children. And no, that does not mean it is written in a childish way. You just really understand how the adult’s actions affect the children which make it an interesting read.

My biggest issue with the series was all the driving that takes place. I forever felt like the adults were just driving around. For a girl that gets motion sickness, it was just too much driving for me! But that is not a factor in the book so I felt like I could really focus on the story. Something that really seemed to work for me was the casting, as I read the book the casting of the TV series totally made sense. I could understand why the actresses who were chosen were chosen.  I must say, I enjoyed this aspect. Having an idea of what the characters looked like, how they spoke and how they interacted with each other based on the Series.

If you are the type of person who likes to read a book before watching the movie/series than I think you might be disappointed with the series. But if you watched the series and enjoy books then definitely read the book. You will enjoy reading the story and the series will actually make more sense. I really loved the book, there were moments where I really did not want to put it down! The book may seem long at 500 or so pages, but it actually is a quick read. There are even some unexpected twists that are not part of the TV version….

Happy reading 🙂

Despicable Me 3 (2017)

Gru and the minions are back in the third instalment of this much-loved franchise. However, this time round the focus is on Gru finding out he has a twin brother. While the twist can be accompanied by an interesting story line, I found this film to be very predictable compared to the first two films in the series. Do not get me wrong I love the despicable me movies. The first two were fantastic and I still re-watch them on a regular basis, but there seemed to be something missing with this third film.

Let’s break it down…

There were some sweet parts that received a few chuckles from the audience but the humour was nothing compared to the first films. I was really looking forward to the film because of how much I love the characters. Gru is hilarious and no one can pull off an accent like that but Steve Carell. He always brings the best out of the character. A villain who has a good heart adopts 3 girls and forms a family… It is a fantastic personality to slot into an animation! It is part of what makes the franchise so successful.

Another part of the films everyone loves is the minions! These funny, cute, yellow little things who talk a language that no one understands. My entire family adore them. My father especially, it is part of the reason why the family outing was to see the movie. However, the minions had such a small part to play in the film. The little part that they received felt so disjointed in comparison to the rest of the film. It did not really fit. I feel there was so much more that could have evolved around the minion’s storylines and I feel that they deserved to be a part of the film more. I mean, who doesn’t love the minions?!

The new antagonist “Balthazar Bratt” is such an entertaining designed character. His 80s persona is such a fun add on to the film. I loved watching the dance battles between him and Gru and for some odd reason I really enjoyed the destructive chewing gum which was his weapon of choice. He also came across as a personal challenge for Gru which added some depth to the film. It felt like if Gru were to finally catch him it would make all his own mishaps melt away and I would have loved to this play out. But I didn’t… does this mean there is an opening for a fourth instalment perhaps?

The animation is absolutely beautiful and it is always comforting to see loved characters return to the screen. This will be what carries the film. The film will do well because of the history that the characters already have with the audience, however, the story, unfortunately, is a weak spot for me. I would have loved the story about the minions needing Gru to have been developed further rather than this long lost brother plot. It almost felt misplaced. It was sweet, just rather forgettable. I doubt the third film will leave as much of as impression as the first two films did.

Pretty Little Liars- End Game

4 years ago I was looking for a series to watch. A friend suggested I give this highly controversial show a try. I say highly controversial because I had heard such mixed opinions about the series.

A week later I had finished 2 whole seasons.

In a short week, I was completely hooked. The show became my newest obsession. Now here we sit, 7 seasons in, plenty of A options out and a huge season finale reveal that I am still trying to wrap my head around. As I watched the reveal unravel I could not sit still. I was pacing up and down my lounge because I was trying to make sense of the information overload that was held within ‘Till death do us part’

I still cannot believe that the show is over and that the complicated lives of Hanna, Spencer, Aria, Emily and Allison have come to a series end. I will miss these wonderful characters and the countless adventures that we went on together…

If you haven’t yet subjected yourself to the finale than I suggest you stop reading and/or climb out from the rock that you are hiding under. Throughout the 7 seasons we have seen a few different versions of ‘A’ the antagonist that has been running the show. At first it was Mona, original ‘A’. She was trying to get revenge over evil Ally and her following of friends. Then it was Charlotte, Allison’s sister/brother (she transgendered from Charles to Charlotte in season 6) Who stole the A game from Mona creating Big ‘A.’ Charlotte or Cece, became ‘A’ because she wanted to get Ally’s attention and punish the ‘liars’ for coming to terms with Alley’s disappearance. Once Cece was killed, there was a short period of peace for the Liars. This only added fuel to the fire and Uber ‘A’ (AD) comes to light. ‘AD’ was so much worse than all the A’s of the past and in the season finale, it is reveled that Spencer has a secret, evil, British, twin sister who is in fact AD!!

In the last episode of the series, we find out that Alex Drake (get it? AD?) wants to become Spencer to such an extent that she asks her boyfriend Wren (remember him from the early seasons?) to shoot her in the exact same place as Spencer’s bullet wound! There were so many great moments during the finale but one of the most impactful scenes for me was when Alex tells Spencer she intends to take over her life entirely. Spencer asks her if she thinks her friends will believe her and Alex reveals that she has already been pretending to be Spencer for a while. Following this conversation previous scenes are shown where Spencer was really Alex! This brought it home for me. It was Alex who told Hannah she would be ok when she was being tortured. It was Alex who kissed Toby goodbye and It was Alex who slept with Toby right after Yvonne’s Death! How freaky!

There is so much I want to say, which is why this post is so delayed… I have heard many different opinions. Some people are saying they knew, some people are telling me they were underwhelmed. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but I think it was brilliant! I for one, had no idea it would end in the way it did. Even though the opinions about the identity of AD differ, there is one thing everyone agrees on. We are all happy about how the series concluded the actors story lines and everyone is glad that Aria, Hanna, Spencer, Emily and Ally landed up with their true loves- It is always nice to see a ‘meant to be’ be.

The finale could not have been possible without the hard work and dedication from the actors and the production team. It is evident that the entire crew worked so hard to make this show such a success. Having said this, there are two points that I feel need some praise… The first is the writing. The fact that the incredible Marlene King was able to transport this story from book to TV and then execute it in such an effortless, relatable and glamourous way is just amazing. Writers do not get enough credit!!! The writers are responsible for putting all the crazy twists and turns onto a piece of paper in such a way that everyone else believes that this story is a possibility. I am in awe of Marlene King’s ability to tell story; her talent is truly magical.

The second part of this whole situation that has me in a twist is Troian Bellisario. After I watched the finale I was in such a state of disbelieve that I read up almost every article I could find about the inception of this ending. In many of the articles that I read, I noticed that Troian stated that she had known she was going to be playing twins for a while before the last season even took place. The rest of the cast however, did not know from the beginning they found out at the end. Troian’s talent aside, I cannot believe how she kept the secret and took it on with such grace, elegance and strength. I can only imagine how difficult and yet exciting it must have been for her to act like a twin acting like her original character. Without her cast mates knowing!

Yes, all the liars got their happy endings but do you know who else managed to finish the game on a sweet note? No other than Mona, nerdy Mona, A Mona, call her what you will but Mona was on the good side of the equation all along. She won the game back! She helped the liars find Spencer and Ezra and in doing so, stole the game from Alex and locked her and Mary in a dollhouse. Ain’t Karma a funny thing…

Now that we have seen the end we know that this show was not just about secrets. It was about friendhsip, it showed us how imporatnt it is to stick by the people who always have your back. I will miss the show. I thoroughly enjoyed it, so much so, that I am going to re-watch it all over again… Thank you, Marlene, thank you, Liars, Thank you freeform…

As Alison Delaurentis once said “It’s Immortatility, my darlings,”
